Simply put, if you opt for soft timber then it means that the weight of your books could see to it that it comes down, the vice versa is also true.
Again the size and amount of wood and related equipment you need will depend squarely on the number and size of shelves you want. Also if you think that you might be in a position where nails will be needed, then the width of your wood will determine whether or not you will use the thick, thin, long or short type of nails. You should however keep in mind that you might one day want to change the design and purpose of the shelves and it is therefore advisable that you be generous with the nail depth.
